CBD oil: Uses, health benefits, and risks
What Is CBD Oil?
CBD is one of the key ingredients of cannabis
To date, scientists have identified about 60 active components of cannabis, called "cannabinoids". These include THC and cannabidiol (CBD) - the plant contains these substances in the highest concentration. Therefore, they are the most famous, and the efforts of most researchers are directed at studying them.
The level of THC and cannabidiol, as a rule, varies depending on the variety of cannabis. For example, using selective methods, some manufacturers managed to obtain cannabis with a high content of CBD and an almost zero level of THC.
Cannabidiol is not psychoactive. Unlike THC, CBD does not produce a psychoactive effect. Of course, because of this, its value among consumers of hemp products is low. However, when it comes to patients who are forced to use marijuana for medical purposes - this is a great advantage. Besides, conscientious doctors prefer to prescribe medications with minimal side effects.
The reason for the lack of psychoactive properties of cannabidiol lies in its incompatibility with CB1 receptors, which are part of the human endocannabinoid system. A large number of such receptors have been found in the brain. The psychoactive effect of THC is based on the interaction of this substance with them. But CBD medical doesn’t interact with them.
Another amazing property of cannabidiol is that it naturally protects the body from the psychoactive effects of THC. Numerous studies have confirmed that CBD counteracts intoxication from THC, including improves memory and prevents the occurrence of anxiety (which is often accompanied by excessive, uncontrolled consumption of marijuana).
In the case of cannabidiol and THC, there is no risk of death associated with an overdose of the substance. However, in order to avoid possible side effects, patients with medical marijuana are advised to choose varieties with high levels of cannabidiol.
Benefits of CBD Oil
Let’s highlight some CBD benefits on some examples of using this substance. The medical use of cannabidiol is very wide.
Despite the fact that the mechanism of action of cannabidiol and THC on the human body is different, their medical properties are almost the same. In 2013, in the scientific journal "British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology" data appeared on the results of research on a substance, during which it was found that cannabidiol has the following medical properties:
antiemetic - relieves symptoms of nausea and vomiting;
anticonvulsant - struggles with manifestations of convulsions;
antipsychotic - help with psychosis;
anti-inflammatory - relieves inflammation;
anti-cancer - prevents the growth of tumors, destroys cancer cells;
antioxidant - prevents neurodegenerative disorders;
antidepressant - eliminates depression and anxiety.
For the first time, the medical effect of cannabidiol was discovered in early 1985 during the treatment of a patient with Parkinson's disease. The clinical use of a remedy containing cannabidiol has shown cannabidiol as an effective way to control dyskinesia that occurs in Parkinson's disease — a disorder in a person’s ability to move at will, characterized by a large number of involuntary movements, shaking and other similar symptoms. Since then, the study of CBD as medicine began to attract more and more attention.
In particular, in November 2007, the California Pacific Center for Medicine published a report that shows the reduction of metastasis in a patient with breast cancer. According to the medical report, the CBD did this by dulling the work of the ID1 gene responsible for the formation of metastases. Since then, research on the use of CBD in the treatment of cancer has become increasingly active, as this substance continues to show a high and stable anticarcinogenic effect.
Recent studies also show that CBD can have an antipsychotic effect, which can be useful in the treatment of serious diseases such as schizophrenia. CBD reduces the symptoms of schizophrenia since it seems to be able to stabilize the effect of NMDA receptors, which are responsible for learning and memory. In one of the cases, as a result of a four-week course of drugs with a high content of cannabidiol, the symptoms of the disease practically disappeared in 42 patients suffering from paranoid schizophrenia. By the way, there are no side effects of CBD oil.
How to Use CBD Oil?
The use of CBD in the form of capsules. This option is gaining popularity due to its similarity with the traditional format of oral medication. For many people, drug consumption is associated with taking pills, and therefore using CBD capsules does not cause emotional discomfort and is perceived as a familiar procedure. That method of taking cannabidiol will be most suitable for older people who are unlikely to agree to take unfamiliar forms of drugs.
The positive side of this method of cannabidiol is the possibility of calculating the amount of therapeutically active substance required for a particular course of treatment.
Concentrated extracts of CBD. The production of CBD extracts allows obtaining a product with a high concentration of useful substances, which can be used to create, for example, medical preparations with CBD content. Extracts allow to expand the traditional use of cannabinoids and make them part of other products that can also be effectively used by the philistine for medicinal purposes, without focusing on the use of certain ingredients in the formulation.
CBD smoking blends. For many, this method of using cannabidiol may become the most acceptable, since it will be as inconspicuous as possible to consume its beneficial properties. Smoking mixtures consist of a mixture of essential oils containing CBD that can be safely consumed.
How Does CBD Hemp Oil Work?
Cannabidiol, or CBD for short, is a substance that is found in large quantities in cannabis, the so-called cannabinoid, one of a group of 85 currently known complex unique substances found in plants of the genus Cannabis. Cannabidiol itself does not possess psychoactive properties - that is, it does not cause changes in consciousness, does not affect perception or attention.
Today, cannabidiol is being actively studied by medicine because of its high medicinal potential. First of all, these are effective properties of CBD-containing remedies, which are already used today in the treatment of such major problems as cancer, epilepsy, schizophrenia, multiple sclerosis, and bipolar disorder. Besides, many researchers have noted the property of cannabidiol to counteract inflammatory processes in the body, counteract sclerotic spasms, reduce the aggressiveness of the spread of cancer cells in cases of breast cancer.
In general, cannabidiol obviously has a number of positive medical properties, while not showing psychoactive properties associated with marijuana, which sometimes - as is the case with mentally ill patients - may be undesirable in treatment.
Is CBD Oil Legal?
The legality of CBD is still an open issue. Not all US states are allowed to sell this remedy for medical purposes. That also applies to European countries where this tool can be legally purchased at a pharmacy or online store. In most cases, the medical use of CBD is not officially recommended and has not been fully studied. Therefore, the World Health Association is not yet ready to recognize CBD as a medical drug.
But those research data that already exist give good hope that soon the CBD will become part of modern therapy against a number of diseases.
What Is CBD Good For?
CBD oil for depression. Israeli scientists analyzed data from 188 patients with depression who received cannabis treatment in the period from 2015 to 2017. Most people were treated with CBD. Six months after starting treatment, 30% of patients reported a significant improvement, 53.7% reported a moderate improvement and only 15% reported a slight improvement or no change.
The quality of life, mood, and ability to perform daily duties were assessed before the start of treatment and within six months. Before treatment, 31.3% of patients reported a good quality of life. In six months, good quality of life doubled to 66.8%. Remedies based on CBD oil have also significantly improved sleep and concentration. CBD oil effects, in this case, are fantastic.
CBD oil for arthritis. Studies have shown that CBD can be an effective therapeutic aid for pain associated with arthritis. In general, CBD has strong anti-inflammatory properties, and studies show that it can be used to reduce inflammation and pain associated with various types of arthritis. CBD is effective in regulating cells and chemicals that can help regulate the response of the immune system to damage and subsequent degradation of tissues and bones.
CBD oil for migraines. CBD not only helps to eliminate the pain but also relieves nausea and other symptoms of severe migraine. The relaxing sedative effect of cannabis is also considered more attractive in terms of eliminating stress, which very often causes migraines.
CBD oil for pain in the back. CBDs are effective in relieving back pain, since they significantly affect the centers of pain in the spine and, moreover, CBDs are not psychoactive substances, and therefore do not affect consciousness.
CBD oil for cancer. Cannabidiol gives hope to patients with cancer. It not only relieves the pain associated with the disease but also slows down the course of the disease. Medical cannabis prevents the spread of cancer in the body, killing cancer cells. That is a very interesting topic among scientists, especially in recent times. Currently, there are no drugs that can be used for cancer prevention, but interesting studies show that the use of CBD oil can reduce the chances of its development. The CBD has an anti-inflammatory antispasmodic effect, it helps with autoimmune diseases, multiple sclerosis, and anxiety disorders.
CBD oil for pets. Many of you already know and heard about the use of CBD oils for pets. Many people around the world have successfully reported that using CBD in pets as a dietary supplement has helped alleviate a number of symptoms. Choosing the right product depends on factors such as your pet's breed or mass. But, of course, on the severity of the disease, you must adjust using CBD oil. It is suitable as an adjunct to the treatment of epilepsy, cancer and other serious diseases.
CBD oil for inflammation. CBD relieves chronic pain by acting on the endocannabinoid system, which controls pain and inflammatory processes. Most diseases are accompanied by pain and inflammation, and CBD stimulates precise receptors that counteract these symptoms.
Because of this, CBD is so incredibly effective in treating many different diseases. It also has a preventive effect on many health problems. First of all, it is a natural treatment option for various diseases, which do not cause any side effects. For this reason, CBD is clearly superior to many drugs.
CBD oil for anxiety. CBD is known to have a calming and anti-inflammatory effect. People just calm down when using it. Often, many people with post-traumatic stress disorders simply cannot overcome anxiety and stress without the help of cannabidiol. The antipsychotic benefits of CBD provide a consistently calm mental state to those who need it most.
CBD oil for sleep. One of the few CBD oil side effects is fatigue. But there are many who seek a variety of medicinal natural herbs to fall asleep. Why not try the effect of CBD in the fight against insomnia? It is not addictive and will help.
CBD oil for ADHD. The first large clinical studies of the therapeutic potential of CBD in the treatment of ADHD symptoms were conducted in the Czech University of Kolín in 42 patients. Studies have shown that taking CBD significantly reduces symptoms compared with the initial state (Leweke et al. 2012). Half of the patients received 800 mg of CBD daily for 4 weeks, while the other half received the usual antipsychotic Amisulpride. Both treatments led to a significant improvement in the clinical signs of the disease, however, CBD with significantly less adverse side effects.
CBD oil for seizures. Another open pilot study was conducted at the University of Sao Paulo, which showed the effectiveness of treating psychotic symptoms with CBD.
Six patients (4 men and 2 women) diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and psychosis for 3 months participated in this study. All patients orally took CBD at a dosage of 150 mg daily for 4 weeks as an adjunct to their standard treatment. During this treatment with CBD, a significant decrease in psychotic symptoms was observed in all patients. Also, CBD did not impair motor functions and had no other negative effects. The authors of the study concluded that the use of CBD can be an effective, well-tolerated and safe way to treat psychosis and seizures.
CBD oil for diabetes. In a study using CBD, the development of diabetes in obese mice with diabetes was studied. Although it is not a direct effect of cannabidiol on blood glucose, the treatment prevents the production of anti-inflammatory IL-12. Prevention of this cytokine is very important because it plays a significant role in the fight against many autoimmune diseases.
CBD oil for autism. The use of hemp preparations has a positive effect on the well-being of children with autism and patients with Parkinson's disease. Researchers at Ben-Gurion University analyzed the health outcomes of autistic patients under the age of 18 and found that marijuana-based medications alleviate various symptoms: seizures, tics, depression, anxiety, and anger attacks.
