CBD oil: Uses, health benefits, and risks

What Is CBD Oil?

CBD is one of the key ingredients of cannabis

To date, scientists have identified about 60 active components of cannabis, called "cannabinoids". These include THC and cannabidiol (CBD) - the plant contains these substances in the highest concentration. Therefore, they are the most famous, and the efforts of most researchers are directed at studying them.

The level of THC and cannabidiol, as a rule, varies depending on the variety of cannabis. For example, using selective methods, some manufacturers managed to obtain cannabis with a high content of CBD and an almost zero level of THC.

Cannabidiol is not psychoactive. Unlike THC, CBD does not produce a psychoactive effect. Of course, because of this, its value among consumers of hemp products is low. However, when it comes to patients who are forced to use marijuana for medical purposes - this is a great advantage. Besides, conscientious doctors prefer to prescribe medications with minimal side effects.

The reason for the lack of psychoactive properties of cannabidiol lies in its incompatibility with CB1 receptors, which are part of the human endocannabinoid system. A large number of such receptors have been found in the brain. The psychoactive effect of THC is based on the interaction of this substance with them. But CBD medical doesn’t interact with them.

Another amazing property of cannabidiol is that it naturally protects the body from the psychoactive effects of THC. Numerous studies have confirmed that CBD counteracts intoxication from THC, including improves memory and prevents the occurrence of anxiety (which is often accompanied by excessive, uncontrolled consumption of marijuana).

In the case of cannabidiol and THC, there is no risk of death associated with an overdose of the substance. However, in order to avoid possible side effects, patients with medical marijuana are advised to choose varieties with high levels of cannabidiol.

Benefits of CBD Oil

Let’s highlight some CBD benefits on some examples of using this substance. The medical use of cannabidiol is very wide.

Despite the fact that the mechanism of action of cannabidiol and THC on the human body is different, their medical properties are almost the same. In 2013, in the scientific journal "British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology" data appeared on the results of research on a substance, during which it was found that cannabidiol has the following medical properties:

  • antiemetic - relieves symptoms of nausea and vomiting;

  • anticonvulsant - struggles with manifestations of convulsions;

  • antipsychotic - help with psychosis;

  • anti-inflammatory - relieves inflammation;

  • anti-cancer - prevents the growth of tumors, destroys cancer cells;

  • antioxidant - prevents neurodegenerative disorders;

  • antidepressant - eliminates depression and anxiety.

For the first time, the medical effect of cannabidiol was discovered in early 1985 during the treatment of a patient with Parkinson's disease. The clinical use of a remedy containing cannabidiol has shown cannabidiol as an effective way to control dyskinesia that occurs in Parkinson's disease — a disorder in a person’s ability to move at will, characterized by a large number of involuntary movements, shaking and other similar symptoms. Since then, the study of CBD as medicine began to attract more and more attention.

In particular, in November 2007, the California Pacific Center for Medicine published a report that shows the reduction of metastasis in a patient with breast cancer. According to the medical report, the CBD did this by dulling the work of the ID1 gene responsible for the formation of metastases. Since then, research on the use of CBD in the treatment of cancer has become increasingly active, as this substance continues to show a high and stable anticarcinogenic effect.

Recent studies also show that CBD can have an antipsychotic effect, which can be useful in the treatment of serious diseases such as schizophrenia. CBD reduces the symptoms of schizophrenia since it seems to be able to stabilize the effect of NMDA receptors, which are responsible for learning and memory. In one of the cases, as a result of a four-week course of drugs with a high content of cannabidiol, the symptoms of the disease practically disappeared in 42 patients suffering from paranoid schizophrenia. By the way, there are no side effects of CBD oil.

How to Use CBD Oil?

The use of CBD in the form of capsules. This option is gaining popularity due to its similarity with the traditional format of oral medication. For many people, drug consumption is associated with taking pills, and therefore using CBD capsules does not cause emotional discomfort and is perceived as a familiar procedure. That method of taking cannabidiol will be most suitable for older people who are unlikely to agree to take unfamiliar forms of drugs.

The positive side of this method of cannabidiol is the possibility of calculating the amount of therapeutically active substance required for a particular course of treatment.

Concentrated extracts of CBD. The production of CBD extracts allows obtaining a product with a high concentration of useful substances, which can be used to create, for example, medical preparations with CBD content. Extracts allow to expand the traditional use of cannabinoids and make them part of other products that can also be effectively used by the philistine for medicinal purposes, without focusing on the use of certain ingredients in the formulation.

CBD smoking blends. For many, this method of using cannabidiol may become the most acceptable, since it will be as inconspicuous as possible to consume its beneficial properties. Smoking mixtures consist of a mixture of essential oils containing CBD that can be safely consumed.

How Does CBD Hemp Oil Work?

Cannabidiol, or CBD for short, is a substance that is found in large quantities in cannabis, the so-called cannabinoid, one of a group of 85 currently known complex unique substances found in plants of the genus Cannabis. Cannabidiol itself does not possess psychoactive properties - that is, it does not cause changes in consciousness, does not affect perception or attention.

Today, cannabidiol is being actively studied by medicine because of its high medicinal potential. First of all, these are effective properties of CBD-containing remedies, which are already used today in the treatment of such major problems as cancer, epilepsy, schizophrenia, multiple sclerosis, and bipolar disorder. Besides, many researchers have noted the property of cannabidiol to counteract inflammatory processes in the body, counteract sclerotic spasms, reduce the aggressiveness of the spread of cancer cells in cases of breast cancer.

In general, cannabidiol obviously has a number of positive medical properties, while not showing psychoactive properties associated with marijuana, which sometimes - as is the case with mentally ill patients - may be undesirable in treatment.
